CLASS OFFERINGS FOR 2025-26

Hip-hop dance is a dynamic street dance style born from the hip hop culture of the 1970s in urban communities. It is know to be high-energy, rhythmic, improvisational in nature, and include many diverse styles. Popping is a dance style that involves hitting a specific muscle to create a jerk, or “pop,” to the rhythm of the music.

Hip Hop Class Descriptions

Pre-Hip Hop
This fun, high-energy class introduces young dancers to the fundamentals of hip-hop in an age-appropriate and engaging way. Students will explore basic elements of popping, breaking, house, and grooves while developing rhythm, timing, body control, and coordination. Beyond movement, this class encourages important social and developmental skills such as taking turns, listening, sharing, and working together. Dancers will build confidence, connect with their peers, and experience the joy of movement in a supportive and upbeat environment.

Hip Hop IA
Building on the skills learned in Pre-Hip Hop (description above), this class will challenge dancers to listen closely to the music and articulate their movements with precision and style. As a freestyle-based dance form, hip-hop encourages self-expression, confidence, and creativity, allowing each dancer to bring their unique personality to the movement.

Hip Hop IB/IIA & IIB
These classes begin to break down the different styles of hip hop, which include basic grooves, breaking, hitting, locking, tutting, waving, and more. The dancer will learn the fundamentals of breaking and basic stunts, while building his or her confidence as a performer.

Hip Hop III/IV
Building upon level II, this class explores more urban street styles such as locking, popping, krump and funk. The dancer will learn to find his or her own personal style through freestyle exercises and build confidence as a performer. This class explores the history and current styles of this genre. The dancer will learn intricate combinations and advanced hip hop choreograph.

Popping I
This high-energy beginner class is perfect for students new to popping. Dancers will be introduced to the foundational elements of popping, with a strong focus on mastering the “hit” and exploring how to move it through different parts of the body and in various directions. Students will begin to develop body control, precision, and timing while learning key techniques and styles such as Boogaloo, Tutting, and Animation. Emphasis is placed on understanding where movement is initiated from and how to articulate it with musicality and intention. Above all, this class is about having fun, building confidence, and discovering the joy of self-expression through this dynamic freestyle-based dance form.

Popping II (placement only)
This advanced-level class focuses on refining foundational popping techniques while expanding movement vocabulary and control. Dancers will continue to develop core concepts such as “hitting” and explore directional movement, musicality, and freestyle application. Styles and techniques covered include Boogaloo, Tutting, and Animation. Emphasis is placed on personal expression, encouraging dancers to add their unique style and creativity to each movement.
